Nereus Fellow at UBC Mathieu Colléter participated in the Day of the Thousandth Fisheries Scientist conference, which took place at Agrocampus Ouest in Rennes, France, on September 16.
Seminar on Fishing in the Polar Regions
Nereus Principal Investigator at Utrecht University Erik Molenaar and the Netherlands Institute for the Law of the Sea (NILOS) hosted a seminar on fishing in the polar regions on September 12 at Utrecht University. The event aimed to facilitate exchange of information between government agencies, industry, environmental groups, and academics in the Netherlands on various aspects of fishing in the polar regions.
UBC Green College seminar series: “Adapting to Global Changes in Oceans and Fisheries”
This year, the Nereus Program will hold a seminar series with UBC’s Green College on “Adapting to global changes in oceans and fisheries.” This series will consist of seven lectures looking at how ocean changes are affecting environments and people. The first three Fall seminars are listed below, four more will be announced soon. The seminars are all open to the public free of charge and will be held at UBC, at 6201 Cecil Green Park Road, Vancouver, BC, Canada.
IUCN World Conservation Congress
The International Union for Conservation of Nature‘s World Conservation Congress took place in Honolulu, Hawaii, from September 1 to 5. Nereus Director of Policy Yoshitaka Ota attended the congress and organized a Knowledge Cafe on September 2 on the topic of governance of marine biodiversity beyond national jurisdiction titled “What can indigenous peoples and local communities contribute to the governance of marine biodiversity beyond national jurisdiction?”
Second Session of the Preparatory Committee for Marine Biological Diversity of Areas Beyond National Jurisdiction
The Second Session of the Preparatory Committee related to Marine Biological Diversity Areas Beyond National Jurisdiction took place from August 26th to September 9th at the United Nations Headquarters in New York City, United States. Nereus Senior Research Fellow at Duke Daniel Dunn and Nereus Principal Investigator at Duke Patrick Halpin attended the session and presented at a series of side events.

Nereus Alumni at ETH Zurich Thomas Fröelicher attended The Royal Society’s meeting on ‘Ocean Ventilation and Deoxygenation in a Warming World’ on September 12 and 13, in London, United Kingdom.
International Conference on Scenarios and Models of Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services in Support of Decision Making
Nereus Director of Science William Cheung was a plenary speaker at the ‘International Conference on Scenarios and Models of Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services in Support of Decision-Making’. He discussed the linking of models and scenarios for marine biodiversity and ecosystems to support policies at regional to global scales. Nereus Fellow at UBC Muhammed Oyinlola presented a poster on his project on developing models and scenarios for the future of global mariculture under global change.
New Nereus Program fellow: Gerald Singh, UBC
Gerald Singh is a Nereus Fellow working with Yoshitaka Ota and Andres Cisneros-Montemayor and collaborating with the United Nations Development Programme. Gerald is characterizing the contribution of a sustainable ocean to achieving broad sustainable development goals. Using the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) as a framework, Gerald is researching how the SDGs are dependent on achieving sustainable use and management of the ocean.
OPEN POSITION: Nippon Foundation-Nereus Program Postdoctoral Fellow at Rutgers University
Nippon Foundation-Nereus Program Postdoctoral Fellow position available in the Pinsky Lab at Rutgers University to work on climate change ecology and evolution in marine ecosystems. Broadly, research in the Pinsky Lab uses empirical data, mathematical models, and population genomics to study global change in the coastal ocean.
