A two-year Post-Doctoral fellowship is available with the Nippon Foundation-University of British Columbia Nereus Program to examine options of boosting adaptation in marine ecosystems and fisheries under climate change.

The Nereus Program is an interdisciplinary research program that works to advance scientific knowledge of future status of world’s oceans, marine fisheries and governance mechanisms through integrated and multi-scale approach. It is a partnership of twenty international academic institutions in North America, Europe and Australia.

The Nippon Foundation-UBC Nereus Program is seeking a Senior Nereus (postdoctoral) fellow to join our team of interdisciplinary researchers in the University of British Columbia. The fellowship will focus on using quantitative modelling approaches to explore potential adaptation options and examine their effectiveness for minimizing impacts of climate change on global marine ecosystems and fisheries. Marine ecosystems and fisheries are increasingly challenged by environmental changes, including ocean warming and acidification. In addition to mitigating carbon emission, it is critical to facilitate and enhance adaptation of marine organism, communities as well as fisheries to minimize climate change impacts on marine biodiversity and ecosystem services. The scope of the project will include characterizing adaptive capacity and respones of marine biodiversity and fisheries, exploring solution options that could help boost their adaptive capacity, and evaluating the effectiveness, co-benefits and trade-offs of these solution options.

This position must possess the following experience:

• A PhD degree in biology, ecology, oceanography, fisheries, environmental sciences, engineering or equivalent qualification;
• Experience with ecological modelling
• Programing skills, familiarity with one or more of the following: R, MatLab, Fortran, and/or others.
• Good English writing and communication skills, with record of scientific publications and presentations in conferences.

Preferred skills and experiences include:

• Experience in studying adaptation (biological, ecological or socio-economic);
• Experience in interdisciplinary environment;
• Experience in organizing research meeting and workshops;
• Experience in participating and developing research collaborations.

This is a full-time position (100%) based in the University of British Columbia Vancouver Campus.
