IUCN World Conservation Congress

September 1, 2016 - September 5, 2016

Nereus Director (Policy) Yoshitaka Ota will attend the IUCN World Conservation Congress in Honolulu, Hawaii, from September 1st to September 5th. He will organize a Knowledge Cafe on Governance on Marine Biodiversity Beyond National Jurisdiction on September 2nd, titled ‘What can Indigenous Peoples and local communities contribute to the governance of marine biodiversity beyond national jurisdiction?’.

Knowledge Cafe description:

“Marine areas beyond national jurisdiction are the global ocean commons, making all of humanity stakeholders in their governance. In an interconnected ocean, coastal communities are custodians of many globally-significant species straddling coasts and high seas, and are also often the first to suffer if these species decline. This event will explore the role that Indigenous Peoples and local communities, their knowledge and practices, can have in the governance of the global ocean commons.”
