Nereus Fellow Richard Caddell will be presenting on “Precautionary Management and the Regulation of Future Fisheries” at the Arctic Frontiers Conference in Tromsø. The conference brings together more than 1400 representatives from academia, government, and business to discuss the challenges associated with sustainable development in the Artic.

Symposium on the South China Sea Arbitration, Utrecht University

Law of the Sea is an important aspect of international law that has implications on state sovereignty, resource distribution, and global fisheries management. Recently, the Philippines utilized the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) to assert its marine territorial claims in the Philippines v. China on the South China Sea.

A case study for conservation: Wilderness protection in Estonia

In his newly published chapter “Wilderness protection in Estonia“, Richard Caddell, Nereus Fellow at Utrecht University, uses Estonia as a case study for European wilderness management. Estonia, Caddell writes, “has proved to be a nature conservation actor of understated significance”. Since the 13th century, Estonia has created protected wildlife areas, with little human intrusion, and has some of the most stringent legal controls over these areas in the EU.

Seventh Annual Oslo-Southampton-Tulane Colloquium

Nereus Fellow at Utrecht University Richard Caddell presented at the Seventh Annual Oslo-Southampton-Tulane Colloquium at Southampton University on October 13, 2016. He presented his paper entitled “Pirates and Platforms: Maritime Disorder and the Arctic Sunrise Arbitration”. The Colloquium is an annual event organised by the law schools of Oslo, Southampton and Tulane Universities, three of the leading centres for maritime law globally.

Seminar on Fishing in the Polar Regions

Nereus Principal Investigator at Utrecht University Erik Molenaar and the Netherlands Institute for the Law of the Sea (NILOS) hosted a seminar on fishing in the polar regions on September 12 at Utrecht University. The event aimed to facilitate exchange of information between government agencies, industry, environmental groups, and academics in the Netherlands on various aspects of fishing in the polar regions.
