OPEN POSITION: Research Assistant/Technician at Nereus Program office, UBC

Job Summary
The Nereus Program is an interdisciplinary research program that works to advance scientific knowledge of future status of world’s oceans, marine fisheries and governance mechanisms through integrated and multi-scale approach. It is a partnership of sixteen international academic institutions in North America, Europe and Australia.

The position is expected to work closely with Global Fishing Watch (GFW), a partner of Nereus Program, to support research projects using the Automatic Identification System (AIS) data. Global Fishing Watch has a database of over 20 billion positions from hundreds of thousands of ocean going vessels between 2012 and today. GFW is using big data and machine learning techniques to identify vessels and where they are fishing. This positions will work closely with the data scientists at Global Fishing Watch and Nereus’ network of researchers.

Work Performed
General tasks include querying data and utilizing AIS data to support collaborative projects between GFW and Nereus Program. Specific responsibilities will include:
– Assisting Nereus Program and GFW for analysing the AIS database operated by GFW;
– Linking external data sets with the GFW AIS database;
– Drafting methods and results sections for publication describing data trends, key observations, statistical summaries, models that best describe data;
– Acting as a liaison, for researchers within the Nereus Program, in accessing the GFW BigQuery AIS database;
– Maintaining the understanding, capabilities, analysis, and results of other Nereus Program network research databases;

Supervision Received
The position has little day to day supervision, though the staff member will meet on a regular basis with the Researcher

If errors were to occur it will negatively impact the program.

Qualifications
High School graduation. A Bachelor degree with majors/minors in computing science, mathematics or physics preferred Minimum of 2 years related experience or the equivalent combination of education and experience. Some experience with SQL relational data bases, modelling and statistical analysis of multivariate datasets.
Command Line Tools and Bash shell.

– Programming skills, familiarity with data analysis with either Python or R;
– Understanding of numerical modelling (Such as linear, generalized linear, nonlinear, and stochastic modelling of complex systems);
– Familiarity with Google Cloud Platform and Google BigQuery is a plus;
– Experience in an academic research environment;
– Writing peer reviewed research publications;
– Presenting research and findings to peers
