国際海洋保護区会議(IMCC) がカナダのニューファンドランド島、セントジョーンズにて7月30日〜8月3日に開催された。この会議には、「今後の海洋保護科学と政策への新しく強力なツールを開発する」ために海洋保護の専門家と学生を結集した。「海洋科学は重要な意味を持つ」をテーマに、今年の会議では、政策立案者や利害関係者に影響を与えるための戦略に対処し、海洋食料安全保障、海洋科学技術、海洋政策など、興味のあるいくつかのトピックに分割した議論が展開された。
ネレウスプログラムの研究者たちがこの会議に参加しプレゼンテーションを行った。 Daniel Dunn（デューク大学/シニアネレウスフェロー）は、「世界の他50％を保護：管轄権を超えた地域の保全での事情と機会」という題目で２日間の事前会議フォーカスグループを催し、国家管轄権外海域における生物多様性（BBNJ）準備委員会プロセスを取り扱ったした。Dunnはまた、2030年までに世界の海洋生物地理学的地域それぞれの中で強調保全のための特定の領域に優先順位をつけることにより、海洋生態系の保全に向けての活動に拍車をかけるための設計構想「グローバル海洋保護区システム（GLORES）のための強固な基準を開発」にと題する事後会議フォーカスグループの開催に関わった。
