Job Description
The Nereus Program is a global interdisciplinary initiative between the Nippon Foundation and the University of British Columbia that was created to further our knowledge of how best to attain sustainability for our world’s oceans. We require a Web and Communications Assistant to help support our communication and outreach efforts.

One of the program’s core objectives is public outreach – transferring the program’s ocean research to policy solutions and public engagement. This position would support this core objective.

Roles and Duties
• Performs website updates using WordPress
• Updates research listings database on website
• Uploads and manages images
• Ensures web content is accurate
• Posts new upcoming events on website event calendar
• Writes short news posts on events, program news and research
• Proof reads and fact checks articles and graphics
• Formats program documents and reports
• Writes social media posts and builds communities
• Performs other duties as required

The Web and Communications Assistant works closely with the Communications Officer and must be able to work independently. This position reports to the Program Directors and Managers.

Complexity of Tasks:
• Duties and tasks are of a moderate complexity and require a high level of attention to detail and accuracy. The information on our website reflects our program and it’s research and must be free of inaccuracies.
• Training and assistance will be available until new tasks are mastered.

• A 3rd or 4th year student at UBC
• Must have experience with WordPress and writing simple html
• Must have experience managing websites, including updating, uploading images, and posting articles
• Strong written communications skills, able to write clean copy without grammar or spelling errors, and proofread text
• Knowledgeable about social media management and community building
• Strong work ethic, able to work independently
• Organized and detail oriented, able to prioritize tasks
• High level of accuracy and strong attention to detail
• Exhibit maturity, good judgment and responsibility
• Knowledge of Japanese an asset

Student Learning Components (UBC Vancouver Work Study/Work Learn Program)

• The workplace orientation will include a tour of the workspace and an introduction to members of the Program office.
• Workplace training will include an orientation to website and social media accounts, including how the backend of the website is organized. Written instruction on how to upload content and images, and maintain pages will be provided with verbal training.

Feedback and ongoing support:
• The student will work closely with the Communications Officer and Program Directors and Managers, who will provide guidance and support.
• Ongoing feedback provided by the Communications Officer and Directors.
• The student will be encouraged to ask questions and provide ideas for supporting the program’s communications efforts and increasing efficiency.

Mentorship opportunities:
• The student will receive support and training from a Communications professional, as well as learn about program management and research. The student will also be in contact with researchers and fellows.

• Insight into working for a global research network. Experience working in a professional setting.
• Exposure to oceans and fisheries research.
• Enhanced knowledge of science communications and outreach.
• Strengthened communication and technical skills, exposure to digital communications techniques.
• Ability to distill scientific knowledge and events into news relevant to a public audience.
