The “Nereus – Predicting the Future Ocean” Program is an international fisheries management and conservation collaboration between The Nippon Foundation (Japan), The University of British Columbia, and four additional academic institutions.

The Senior Research Associate conducts research on how anthropologic factors can be incorporated into global fisheries governance systems. The research also involves strategic planning, system and policy development, as well as socio-economic and governance aspects related to fisheries management and marine conservation.

The successful candidate will join the Nereus steering committee, which sets the strategic guidelines for the program, and will work closely with the Nereus program leader on all aspects of running the program.

Candidates must have a PhD in anthropology and postdoctoral experience in resource management and conservation with emphasis on marine policy and socioeconomic research. We seek a candidate who has worked in both science and policy research projects in multicultural and interdisciplinary settings. We also require experience with marine conservation and resource management in Japan, and experience working with Japanese foundations and international organizations concerned with ocean policy. Expertise in science communication and coordinating interdisciplinary research is also necessary.

The position is based at the Institute for the Oceans and Fisheries at the UBC Point Grey Campus in Vancouver. Considerable travel to the other network institutions and The Nippon Foundation will be required. Fluency in written and spoken English and Japanese is required, as the successful candidate will serve as liaison between UBC, The Nippon Foundation, and Japanese organizations.

The term appointment is March 1, 2016 to February 28, 2017 with the possibility of extension given satisfactory performance and availability of funding. Salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.
