Richard Caddell, Senior Nereus Fellow (International Law, Utrecht University), presented a paper at a workshop on “Persistent Challenges and Recent Developments in International Fisheries Law” at the K. G. Jebsen Centre for the Law of the Sea, UiT The Arctic University of Norway, Tromsø, on September 23, 2015.

Dr Caddell’s presentation engaged ongoing research that he is conducting under the framework of the Nereus Program and examined the inter-relationship between regional fisheries management mechanisms and other oceans governance mechanisms. In recent years, multilateral environmental agreements have sought to harness the expertise of regional fisheries bodies in discharging their respective mandates and to ensure more coherent conservation strategies for the areas under their jurisdiction. Dr Caddell considered the legal arrangements incumbent in this process and evaluated the practical results of this cooperation, including pioneering developments in the north Atlantic region towards a more coherent policy for marine protected areas, as well as implications for by-catch mitigation strategies in the Mediterranean Sea and Southern Ocean.
