The Nippon Foundation-Nereus Program Tokyo Symposium 2017 will take place from December 21 to 22, 2017 at the Nippon Foundation Building Lobby in Tokyo, Japan. At the Symposium, participants will address the “Limits of the Ocean” through a series of speeches, presentations, and panel discussions. Nereus Program attendance at the event will include Director of Policy Yoshitaka Ota (University of Washington), Director of Science William Cheung (UBC), and Principal Investigators Andre Boustany (Monterey Bay Aquarium), Quentin Hanich (University of Wollongong),Jack Kittinger (Arizona State University), Laurie Chan (University of Ottawa), Elsie Sunderland (Harvard University), Charles Stock (US NOAA), Malin Pinsky (Rutgers University), Didier Gascuel (Agrocampus Ouest), and Ryan Ryaczewski (University of South Carolina).
Over the course of two afternoons, the Principal Investigators from new partner institutes of the Nippon Foundation-Nereus Program will address the various challenges facing the world’s oceans, covering a diverse range of topics, such as: climate change impacts on marine ecosystems, the role of fisheries and food security in the South Pacific islands, and the meaning of “socially responsible” seafood supply chains. From both natural and social science perspectives, each speaker will discuss how interdisciplinary research can generate new scientific understandings and policy innovations towards ocean sustainability.
