Nereus Fellow Becca Selden (Rutgers) is helping facilitate a symposium at the American Fisheries Society’s 147th annual meeting in Tampa, Florida, August 20-24.
The Symposium, “Marine Species on the Move: Understanding and Responding to Shifting Distributions of US Fish Stocks” will bring together researchers to discuss and identify information gaps and potential management strategies for US fish stocks that are undergoing distribution shifts due to changing ocean conditions. The Symposium will occur between 9:40am to 5:20pm on Tuesday August 22 and will continue on Wednesday August 23 from 9:40am to 2:20pm in Room 12 of the Convention Center.

Symposium Description:
Marine species are on the move in many regions associated with changing ocean conditions, fishing pressure and other factors. Shifting distributions are impacting fishermen, fishing communities and fisheries management, and these impacts are expected to increase with continued changes in ocean conditions. This Symposium addresses the growing demand for information to better prepare for and respond to shifting distributions of fisheries-related species in US marine ecosystems. Presenters will provide information on (1) current and projected shifts in the distribution of fisheries-related species, (2) impacts on fisheries management, fishing sectors and fishing communities, and (3) tools, information and strategies to reduce negative impacts and take advantage of new opportunities. The session will help identify key information needs and management strategies for US marine species on the move.
